What to Expect When You Book an Air Duct Cleaning Appointment

If you’ve never had it done before, it’s fair to have questions about what to expect during an air duct cleaning appointment. Will the crew be in your house all day? Do you need to move furniture? Is it going to be loud, messy, dusty? We get asked some version of this almost every week, so here’s an honest, step-by-step look at what actually happens when we show up at your door in Port St. Lucie, Fort Pierce, or anywhere else on the Treasure Coast.

Before the Truck Even Arrives

Most jobs start with a quick phone call to confirm the appointment window and get a sense of your home — how many return vents, roughly how old the system is, whether anyone in the house has allergies or breathing concerns worth noting. If you’re a same-day caller, we’ll work you into the schedule when we can, but a little advance notice always helps us plan the visit better.

When we pull up, you’ll typically see a van with the cleaning equipment, not a giant rig blocking your driveway. We’re not tearing up your yard or running hoses through your flower beds — most of what we need comes right in through the front door.

The Walkthrough and Inspection

Every appointment starts with a look at the system before any equipment gets set up. We walk the house, note where the supply and return vents are, check the condition of the ductwork we can access, and take a look inside the air handler. This is the step that tells us what we’re actually dealing with — some homes have light dust buildup, others have visible debris, pet hair, or signs that a renovation dumped drywall dust straight into the system.

This is also when we’ll flag anything unusual — a disconnected duct run, a moldy-looking spot, a dryer vent that’s clearly been ignored for years. You’ll know before we start what we found and what the plan is, not after the fact.

Setting Up the Equipment

Once we know the layout, we bring in the actual cleaning equipment. The core of it is a high-powered vacuum system connected to your home’s main trunk line — the central duct that everything else branches off from. That vacuum creates negative pressure through the whole system, which is what actually pulls loose debris, dust, and buildup out of the ducts instead of just stirring it around.

From there, we work vent by vent using agitation tools to loosen anything stuck to the interior duct walls — dust that’s been sitting undisturbed for years doesn’t just fall out on its own. Between the agitation and the vacuum pulling everything toward the trunk line, debris gets pulled out of the system rather than blown back into your living space.

What a Tech Actually Checks Along the Way

  • Supply and return vent covers — cleaned and reinstalled properly, not left loose
  • Visible condition inside the air handler and coil area
  • Any obvious leaks, disconnects, or crushed sections in accessible ductwork
  • Dryer vent condition, if you’ve bundled that service in — lint buildup here is a well-known cause of home dryer fires, and it’s one of the easiest things to overlook
  • Whether sanitizing or an air purification add-on makes sense based on what we’re seeing

How Long It Actually Takes

This is usually the first question people ask, and the honest answer is: it depends on the size of the home and how many vents you have, but a typical single-family home runs a couple of hours from setup to cleanup. Larger homes or commercial spaces with more ductwork take longer. Dryer vent cleaning tacks on additional time — usually not much for a single-story home, a bit more for a two-story where the vent run is longer and harder to access.

We’d rather take the time to do a thorough job than rush through it to hit some artificial time target. If something looks like it needs extra attention, we’ll tell you before we spend extra time on it, not surprise you with it afterward.

Cleanup and Walkthrough

When the cleaning’s done, vent covers go back on, and we do a final walkthrough with you. This is your chance to ask questions, look at what came out of your system if you’re curious, and hear our honest take on the overall condition of your ductwork — including anything we’d recommend keeping an eye on going forward.

We don’t leave a mess behind. The vacuum system is designed to contain debris, not scatter it through your house, so you’re not left vacuuming your own floors after we leave.

What It Costs

Air duct cleaning starts at $245 minimum, with the final price depending on the size of your home and system. Dryer vent cleaning runs $125 for a single-story home and $175 for a two-story home. We’ll always confirm actual pricing before we start, so there’s no surprise on the invoice.
